Root Canals

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure that involves removing infected pulp and disinfecting the space. Root canal treatment is a type of endodontic procedure that treats the inside of the teeth. Once the tooth is clean, it is carefully filled with sealed. Root canals are required when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected due to bacteria or damaged due to trauma. Root canals save the natural teeth and restore the chewing function.

What happens during root canal treatment?

At the beginning of your procedure, you will be profoundly numb using local anesthetic. After the tooth is numb, the area around the tooth is isolated. A small opening is then made on the tooth surface. Next, the pulp chamber and canals are cleaned with special endo file instruments. Once infected tissue is removed, the canals and pulp chamber are irrigated and dried. The roots are then filled with biocompatible gutta-percha material using adhesive cement to make sure a complete seal is achieved.  At the end of the procedure, a temporary filling is placed in the opening of the tooth crown. It is imperative to return to the office for a permanent crown to protect the tooth and restore it to full function. Teeth towards the back are always recommended to have a full coverage crown to avoid tooth fracture.

What to expect after a root canal procedure?

Most patient experience some level of discomfort after the procedure. It is recommended to follow Dr Duren’s instructions to avoid unnecessary complications. Patient may need to take over the counter or prescription pain medications to relive the pain caused by the pulp inflammation. After a root canal, try to eat soft foods and make sure to avoid hard or chewy foods until a tooth has been restored to its function with a build-up material or a dental crown.
